William George Briggs

William "Bill" George Briggs, 81, of Stafford, Virginia passed away peacefully, with family by his side on January 17, 2025 at Mary Washington Hospital. As a young man, Bill proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. He began his career in law enforcement with the Arlington County Police Department in 1967. Briggs was a career police officer and detective with the Prince William County Police Department before retiring in 1996. Following retirement, Briggs remained connected to his colleagues by joining the Prince William County Retired Police Officers Association. William "Bill" loved history and was a Civil War buff. He was proud of his family's history as firefighters in New Jersey and collected die-cast metal firetrucks and police vehicles. He was fond of the outdoors. In his younger days Bill took day trips to Rehoboth Beach with family and could often be found poolside enjoying the sunshine with a cold beer. He loved to laugh, was quick-witted and had a weakness for Camel cigarettes. In his later years, Bill could be found enthusiastically regaling stories of his time in law enforcement. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late William A. Briggs and the late Dorothy Briggs, and his infant son, William. Briggs is survived by three daughters; Kathleen McDowell of Fredericksburg, Virginia; Cynthia Byers of Fairfax, Virginia; and Caitlin Briggs of Chattanooga, Tennessee; one brother, Dennis Briggs of Woodbridge, VA; two sisters, Sue Briggs of Columbia, MD and Pat Dumroese of Towson, MD; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Monday, March 31, 2025 at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico, 18424 Joplin Road, Triangle, Virginia 22172 (please arrive by 10:30 a.m.) followed by a gathering at Paddy's Public House, 9 Center Street, Stafford, VA 22556.
