Julio Carlos Cruz Merino

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Julio Carlos Cruz Merino, who passed away on February 17, 2026, at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge, Virginia. He was born on April 12, 1955, in Durán, Ecuador. He moved to New York in 1973 and later settled in Woodbridge, Virginia, in 1992. Julio worked for Woodbridge Plumbing for a decade before establishing his own handyman business in Virginia. He was recognized for his hard work and commitment. Julio was known for raising Chihuahuas and was passionate about music, singing, dancing, movies, and outings. Throughout his life, he participated in various activities, including soccer, skating, martial arts, and skiing. He also took part in several singing competitions, winning some of them. Julio is survived by his wife, Virginia Ysabel Andrade Campoverde, whom he married in 2009; his former wife, Nery Riveiro, mother of his children Iliana McNutt (Robert McNutt), Nery Washington, and Juan Carlos Cruz (Masayo Cruz); his son, David Cruz; and his stepsons, Jonathan Taynys, Ricardo Sotomayor, and Jerry Sotomayor. He was the grandfather, or “Papa,” of Roberto, Ricardo, and Antonio McNutt; Leo and Victor Cruz; Laura Elizabeth, Moriah, Christopher, Esther, and Rebekah Washington; as well as his great-grandson, Roberto Timothy Riveiro McNutt (“Bear”). He is also survived by his sisters: America, Nelly, Inez, Teresa, and Bertha Cruz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlos Julio Cruz and Eugenia Merino, and his sisters, Julia and Linda Cruz. Memorial contributions of plants or flowers for the funeral are welcome. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered support during this difficult time. Julio’s warmth, energy, and generous spirit will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew him.
