Joyce Ann Whitehurst Wooten

Joyce Ann Whitehurst Wooten gained her heavenly wings from the Father and fell into a peaceful sleep on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, Falls Church, Virginia. Joyce was born to the late Elijah Whitehurst and the late Neda Mae Moore Whitehurst on May 16, 1957, in Jamesville, North Carolina (formerly Darden, North Carolina.) The family moved to New York in 1965. Joyce spent most of her childhood in Bronx, New York attending P.S. 99, John Dwyer Middle School and Dodge Vocational High School. After the family moved back to North Carolina in 1975, Joyce completed her senior year at Jamesville High School. Joyce married the love of her life, Ray Anthony Wooten Sr., her high school sweetheart. Later, they moved to Hampton, Virginia, where they started their family. They were passionately in love, and into this union Ray Anthony Wooten Jr. was conceived. After they departed from Hampton, Virginia, Ray enlisted into the United States Army. He and his wife, Joyce traveled the world abroad. They experienced a multitude of places and cultures. Into this union, a second child was born in Germany Troy Renard Wooten. Subsequently, Ray was transferred from Germany back to the United States to Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After a few years living in Virginia a Princess was born, Thomina Necole Wooten. Joyce joined the Church at an early age. She became a member of Promise Land Disciples of Christ Church in Jamesville, North Carolina. While living in Lorton, Virginia, she attended South County Church where Pastor Andy Casper is the senior shepherd. She enjoyed visiting and worshiping with fellow Christians. Joyce was employed as a Secretary for Miracle Cleaning Services for many years. Her last employment was work as a Health Care Assistant for elderly Alzheimer patients. She had a sweet, loving and kind spirit working with people in both occupations. In her free time, she found pleasure in watching black and white western movies and reading. In addition, Joyce enjoyed cooking, sharing recipes and sharing her delicious food. Joyce always put others first and was a true blessing to so many people. Preceding Joyce in death are her husband, Ray Anthony Wooten Sr.; daughter, Thomina Necole Wooten; father, Elijah Whitehurst; Mother, Neda Mae Spann; brothers; Winfred and Beverly Whitehurst; and infant sisters; Wanda Kay and T’Esther Whitehurst. Joyce was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend. She leaves to cherish many beautiful memories: three loving and devoted sons: Ray Anthony Wooten Jr. of Woodbridge, Virginia and Troy Renard Wooten of Lorton, Virginia; spiritual godson, Amont’e Porter of Woodbridge, Virginia; four brothers: Earnest Whitehurst ( wife Annie) of Jamesville, North Carolina; Alfonso Whitehurst (wife Lovella ) of Jamesville, North Carolina; Ricky Whitehurst of Wichita, Kansas; Jermaine Spann of Roper, North Carolina; one sister, Juanita Ann Wade ( husband Anthony) of Eastover, North Carolina; four aunts: Vera Moore and Lorraine Moore of Jamesville, North Carolina; Susie Tobias of Fort Washington, Maryland and Judy Bowden of Fort Washington, Maryland; father-in-law, Roosevelt Simmons of North Charleston, South Carolina; two sisters-inlaw: Janice Simmons and Grace Simmons of Baltimore, Maryland; brother-in-law, Kirk Simmons of Baltimore, Maryland; five grandchildren: Londyn Wooten, Jamauri Wooten, Natalia Wooten, Chase Wooten, and Sa’niya McNaughton, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family will receive visitors Friday, September 8, 2023 from 11am-12pm with a service at 12pm at Miller Funeral Home, 3200 Golansky Blvd., Woodbridge, VA 22192. Interment will be held Monday, September 11, 2023 at 10:30am at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA.
