Edwin Coffee

Edwin Russell Coffee, 82, of Woodbridge, VA passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones on August 8, 2022. Edwin was born July 3, 1940 in March Field, California to Virgil Oren Coffee and Iva Fern Wingfield-Coffee and was the second oldest of eight children. After he graduated from Highland High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he went on to attend the University of New Mexico from 1958-1960. In 1961, he joined the army and was stationed in Rhode Island where he met his future wife, Phyllis Sonntag. They married in 1963 and lived in Rhode Island while he continued his education. He went on to gain a B.S. in History and Education from Barrington College and a M.A in U.S. History from Providence College in 1969. Shortly after he received his Master’s, he accepted a job at the National Archives and relocated to Dale City, Virginia with his wife and children where he remained up until his final days. Some of Edwin’s hobbies included: genealogy which he often traveled for when researching his ancestors and reading. He was a Science Fiction lover and always had a book in hand wherever he could sit and read. Edwin was predeceased by his parents, his wife Phyllis, two brothers: James Greene and Daniel Coffee, and two sisters: Iva Barclay and Barbara Gonzales. He is survived by his three daughters: Jennifer Shotwell and her husband Edward Shotwell of Stafford, VA, Alison Lang and her husband Tony Henderson of Dale City, and Debra Vedder of Dale City, VA, his two brothers: Virgil Coffee of Albuquerque, NM, Dale Coffee of Rio Rancho, NM and one sister: Patricia Britt of Odessa, TX along with eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Edwin will forever be remembered as a loving husband, wonderful father, and caring grandfather. He was a hard-working, generous man who had a kind word for everyone he met. He left an everlasting impression on everyone he ever met and he will be dearly missed by everyone that had the chance to know him. Services for Edwin are scheduled for 12 pm on Tuesday, August 16th, 2022 at Miller’s Funeral Home located on Golansky Blvd in Woodbridge, VA. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery at 2 pm.
