Commander Wayne Lee Currie, USN (Ret.) March 21, 1937 – June 18, 2026 Commander Wayne Lee Currie, USN (Ret.), devoted husband, father, grandfather, engineer, and proud naval officer, passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2026, at the age of 89, surrounded by the love of his family. Wayne was born on March 21, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Richard and Ruth Currie. He grew up in Missouri, where he excelled academically and athletically. He graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1955, where he participated in football and basketball, was a member of the National Honor Society, received the prestigious Bausch & Lomb Physics Award, and achieved the rank of Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Wayne went on to earn his engineering degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia, where he was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the nation’s oldest engineering honor society—an achievement that remained one of his proudest throughout his life. Through the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC), he began a lifetime of service to his country. Following graduation, Wayne proudly served as an engineering officer in the United States Navy, including service with the Navy Seabees. He retired with the rank of Commander after a distinguished career marked by leadership, integrity, and dedication. Following his military retirement, Wayne began a second career with General Dynamics’ Electric Boat Division, where he continued his engineering work and formed lasting friendships, including with his longtime friend and colleague, Sam Dutrow. His military career took his family between Virginia, Hawaiʻi, and Japan. Hawaiʻi held a special place in his heart as the home of his beloved wife, Theada, and their years in Hawaiʻi and Japan gave their children unforgettable experiences and a lifelong appreciation for travel, different cultures, and adventure. Wayne married the love of his life, Theada Catherine “Thea” Currie, and together they shared more than six decades of marriage. Through every military assignment and every season of life, they built more than a home—they created a place where everyone felt welcome. Family, friends, neighbors, and fellow service members always knew there was room for one more. Their home was filled with laughter, conversation, celebrations, and a generosity of spirit that made everyone feel like family. Although Wayne faithfully served his country, his greatest commitment was always to his family. He showed up. He attended swim meets, basketball and football games, science programs, school events, parades, and nearly every activity his children or grandchildren were involved in. Whether cheering from the stands or quietly sitting in the audience, his presence told his family that what mattered to them mattered to him. His greatest legacy was not the rank he earned, but the love he gave and the example he set. His family always knew that if something mattered to them, it mattered to him. Wayne was a man of quiet strength, humility, and unwavering character. He led by example and believed in honor, education, hard work, responsibility, and perseverance. His calm presence, thoughtful guidance, and steadfast devotion left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Wayne is survived by his children, Taryn (Moore) Pyle, Dean Moore, Roger Moore, and Elizabeth (Currie) Moseley; his daughters- and son-in-law, Michelle (Thomas) Moore, Tammy (Murphy) Moore, and Donald Moseley; his grandchildren, Dylan, Gavin, and Emily Moore; Alexander and Sylviahnna Moore; and Gibson, Oliver, and Wade Moseley; and many extended family members, lifelong friends, and those whose lives were enriched by knowing him. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Theada Catherine Currie; his parents, Richard and Ruth Currie; and his sister, Joyce Glittenberg-Terre. The family finds comfort in knowing that Wayne is now reunited with Thea, the love of his life. His legacy of service, leadership, kindness, dependability, and unconditional love will continue to live on through the family he cherished and the many lives he touched. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Sam and Mary Dutrow for their steadfast friendship, compassion, and unwavering support. Their kindness brought comfort not only to Wayne, but to all who loved him. A visitation and service for family and friends will be held at Miller Funeral Home, 3200 Golansky Boulevard, Woodbridge, Virginia, on Monday, August 3, 2026. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., with the memorial service immediately following at 6:00 p.m. A private interment with full military honors will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, where Wayne will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Theada. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in Wayne’s memory to either the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society or the University of Missouri College of Engineering Civil Engineering Fund.
