Minnie Evelyn Rose, age 76, of Woodbridge, Virginia died peacefully on October 12, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family after a long battle with Dementia/Alzheimer’s. Evelyn was born on July 8, 1944 in Graceville, Florida, to the late Julius C. Slater and Reba Evelyn (Brock) Slater. In the fall of 1967, Evelyn married the love of her life and her lifelong partner, U.S Air Force Lieutenant Floyd E. Rose Jr in Ft Walton Beach and they began their journey through life that took them around the globe. Evelyn was a teacher at heart and after graduating from Graceville High School (Class of 62) studied at Chipola Community College, Troy State University, and University of Texas at San Antonio earning a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Teaching Certification and a Master of Arts in Counseling. She explored her passion throughout her travels embracing positions in education in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia & overseas in England, Turkey & Germany. During her career as an educator she worked as a Middle School Teacher, Substitute Teacher, Special Education Teacher, English as a Second Language Teacher, Counselor, and an education activist in the communities she shared. In addition to being a loving wife and an admirable educator, Evelyn became an adoring mother giving birth to two children, Christopher and Elizabeth. As Evelyn watched her family grow and blossom she welcomed the joy of her two granddaughters, Shelby and Kate. As a wife, mother, and grandmother, Evelyn cared for her family creating a home away from home for all her family through their many travels all the while maintaining ties to extended family and friends around the globe. Although Evelyn had to retire early due to disability, she found her life’s work as a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Educator. Evelyn shared her experience, knowledge, glowing smile, and genuine wonder of the world with all those around her, all around the world, and she is missed dearly by many. Evelyn Rose was a lifelong Baptist and an active member of Grace Baptist Church in Woodbridge, Virginia. Evelyn Rose is survived by her husband of 54 years-Floyd E. Rose Jr; son, Christopher Rose of Arlington, Virginia; daughter, Elizabeth and her husband Cecil Taylor of Montclair, Virginia; granddaughters, Shelby and Kate Taylor of Montclair, Virginia; Sisters: Reba Nell and her husband Ronnie Bush of Graceville, Florida and Virginia Sue and her husband Danny Powell of Pensacola, Florida; Brothers, Tommy Slater of Phoenix City, Alabama, Jim Slater and his wife Valerie of Marianna, Florida and Louie Slater of Graceville, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Florida, Virginia, and New York. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Miller Funeral Home, 3200 Golansky Ave, Woodbridge, Virginia 22192. Graveside service will be held at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, request memorial contributions be made to Grace Baptist Church, 14242 Spriggs Road, Woodbridge, Virginia 22193.
