KENNETH T. BRUNSVOLD, LT. COL., USMC (Ret.) Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Kenneth T. Brunsvold, 78, beloved husband and father, died peacefully in hospice care at Inova Fairfax Hospital on June 12, 2021 after a valiant battle against cancer. Ken was born in the District of Columbia on December 10, 1942, son of retired Army Col. Kenney T. Brunsvold and Lena High Brunsvold. He graduated from St. Stephen’s in Alexandria, VA, and then matriculated at Virginia Military Institute where he was Commander of the Color Guard and earned his BS in Physics in 1964. His MS in R&D Management was earned in 1975 from American University and MBA Certificate from Tulane University. He was also a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College Program Managers’ Course. With a keen mind and strong interest in various fields of study, he continued to expand his education to include becoming a gemologist, a journeyman electrician, and a certified financial planner. He was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1964, was a decorated Vietnam combat veteran, and retired after an illustrious 20-year career which included various command and staff assignments. Upon retirement from the military, he joined MKI Systems and eventually served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the company until his second retirement in 2007. A proud resident of the Town of Occoquan, beginning in 2006 Ken was elected to four consecutive two-year terms as a member of the Occoquan Town Council and as Vice Mayor. He also served concurrently as Chairman of the Occoquan Planning Commission. He was a member of Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons located in Alexandria, VA; the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Alexandria in the Orient of Virginia; and Alexandria Court No. 162, Royal Order of Jesters. Ken’s passion was boating and cruising. He captained The Viking for 26 years, was well known in the boating community on the Potomac River, and was well loved by his cruise family. For all those whose life he touched, he will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife, Colleen Brunsvold of Manassas, and his two sons, Kenneth T. of Woodbridge, and Thomas W. of Occoquan, VA. Visitation will be at the Miller Funeral Home, 3200 Golansky Blvd., Woodbridge, VA., on Thursday, June 24, 2021 between the hours of 3 and 6 PM. Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery November 15, 2021 at 1PM. Please arrive at the old post chapel 45 minutes ahead of time with your vehicles. You must enter Joint Base Myer, Hatfield Gate. You will need vehicle transportation not only from the chapel but throughout the entire service. Everyone 16 and older will need an ID.
