Bernice Hughes, 89, of Woodbridge, Virginia, died peacefully in her sleep at her home on February 4, 2021. Bernice was a spitfire, the life of every party, and the matriarch of a large and tight-knit family. Born January 6, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio, Bernice worked for General Motors before settling in Virginia. She retired many years ago after a long career at Giant Food. She had countless close friends, loved cheering for the Cleveland Browns and Indians, and sitting on her front porch with family. She also loved music, dancing and politics. She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish, where she attended Mass. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Leo, her parents Elizabeth and Andrew Batcha, and siblings Dorothy, Irene and Edward. She is survived by her sons Steven, Matthew, Patrick, Gregory; her daughters Elizabeth Somers, Susanna Reck, Bernadette Varner; and grandchildren Josh, Taylor, Kaitlyn, Jordan, Addison, Jillian, Bo, Cameron, Elizabeth, and Paul. A viewing is scheduled from 12-3 p.m. on February 18 at Miller Funeral Home on 3200 Golansky Blvd., Woodbridge, VA 22192. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on February 19 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church on 12805 Valleywood Drive, Lake Ridge, VA 22192 Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest alongside her late husband, Paul, a veteran of the Korean War.
