Walter Edward Wisnieski

Walter Edward Wisnieski passed away on July 2nd, 2024 in Woodbridge, Virginia at 95 years old. Known lovingly as Walt, Walter, Władek or Ski, he's most endearingly remembered as a darling dad, doting poppop, and dedicated husband. Equally, he's commemorated as a soldier, and a forever hero to those who loved him dearest. Son of the late Jacob Wisnieski (formerly Wisniewski) and Stella (née Borkowski/Borkowska), Walter was born on October 13, 1928, in Weirton, West Virginia, and raised across the river in Steubenville, Ohio. While his mother was born in the United States, his father and maternal grandparents had emigrated from Poland; as a result, Walter learned to speak both Polish and English and was immersed in Polish culture as a young boy. Prior to his family relocating to downtown Steubenville, his earliest and fondest memories were those of life on the farm, where he spent his days tending to the animals. In 1945, just days after his 17th birthday, he joined the United States Army, wanting to contribute to the greater global efforts occurring with the finality of World War II, as well as to provide for his mother and siblings back home in Ohio. He was the third oldest of eight children, and the eldest son; therefore, he felt it his duty to provide for the family. He served for nearly 22 years active duty in the Army, with over 11 of those years served overseas - including multiple tours in Germany and France - and service that spanned the eras of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Earning himself the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal, his first duty assignment in 1946 took him to Germany where he served as a young Military Policeman in the execution of security operations during a precarious post-war period to help rebuild law and order, and to ensure a democratic transition within Germany. After nearly three years in Germany, he left Stuttgart and the 534th Military Police Service Company, and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. There, he was assigned to the 3rd Antiaircraft Artillery (AAA) Automatic Weapons Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division as an artillery soldier. In 1950, he and his unit deployed to fight in the Korean War, where he earned the United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars. Most strikingly, during the brutal winter of 1950, he fought in the historic Chosin Reservoir Campaign, serving as part of the critical relief force that pushed forward to secure the vital breakout route for thousands of surrounded U.S. troops. With open-topped, armored vehicles equipped with heavy caliber firepower, his unit withstood intense enemy pressure to keep a vital mountain pass open in extreme sub-zero temperatures. As thousands of Marines and soldiers executed a fighting breakout from the reservoir toward the coast, his unit served as the protective rear guard - the thin line between the survivors and a relentless enemy. His unit utilized their immense defensive firepower to hold the line along the treacherous mountain road, shielding the long column of wounded and exhausted troops until they reached the coast, concluding a grueling, miles-long journey. Upon arrival at the port of Hungnam, his unit held a shrinking defensive perimeter against a closing, vastly larger enemy force. The evacuation of the port was a massive two-week operation, but as the main forces were systematically withdrawn over those days, his unit served as the final rear guard. They remained in position, maintaining a 'ring of fire' to protect the very last troops and equipment as they embarked on their ships, with Walter being one of the last to load his vehicle and finally board on Christmas Eve. As their vessels cleared the harbor on that final day, the port facilities were detonated behind them - a conclusion to the largest amphibious evacuation in military history, which successfully saved over 105,000 U.S. and allied troops, alongside nearly 100,000 civilian refugees. For his efforts, Walter earned his place among the 'Chosin Few' - a distinction held with quiet reverence, acutely aware of the many who never returned. Yet, for Walter and his unit, the war was far from over; upon reaching safety, they were quickly reorganized and thrust back into the fray to continue their service across the Korean Peninsula. Following his combat service, he transitioned to the Transportation Corps, serving during the height of the early Cold War in Paris, France - a city that stood at the center of Western Europe's defense strategy. He loved Paris and France writ large, and would fondly recount his time there, to include being based, at one point, in the historic stables of Versailles. Following other assignments, to include at Ft. Meade, Maryland and Ft. Myer, Virginia, Walter found himself back in France in the 1960s - a place he loved, but also a place where love would find him. Fortuitously, he'd go to a show one night and meet a British singer from London who was performing with her band, and who would soon become the love of his life. Walter and Patricia Ann Wisnieski (née Inger) would fall in love and eventually know 57 years of marriage before her passing on December 16th, 2021 at 78 years old. Their union would bring four children into the world: Sharon Patricia, Kevin Walter, Anthony Edward, and Kelley Ann (Grimes) - three of whom would tragically predecease him, Sharon (6 months), Kevin (31), and Anthony (57), with Anthony leaving the world just five months prior to his own passing. Although there was tragedy, Walter and Patricia both felt fortunate to also know the love of their grandaughters, Sarah Ortiz (née Wisnieski) and Anjoleigh Schindler - whom they adored. Leaving her band days behind, Patricia accompanied Walter on military assignments to Germany and then lastly in Washington, D.C. before Walter's retirement from the Army in 1967. Following military retirement, Walter held a variety of jobs at different stages - which included federal service; working as an ambulance driver and providing emergency medical care during patient transport for Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C.; defense contracting with Honeywell in Massachusetts; and in professional retirement, he stayed active and connected to his New Hampshire community through clerking. The family lived in the greater Washington, D.C. metro area in both Maryland and Virginia, then many years in their beloved New Hampshire, and then eventually returned to Virginia where Walter and Patricia would live their final years - all to be near their children and grandchildren. Growing up and into early adulthood, Walter enjoyed playing football and baseball; he also enjoyed bowling, an activity he refined into his adult years and which he was particularly adept and would win competitions. Throughout his life, he remained a lifelong fan of professional and college football; he was an ardent supporter of the Washington Commanders and the New England Patriots. He enjoyed playing softball, and also coached his daughter's recreational youth softball team. He was partial to fishing as well, and would take his sons and their friends to the Potomac River to catch fish when they were younger. He liked to play cards, and thoroughly enjoyed horse racing and the racetrack - where he was a keen handicapper. Walter had a constant curiosity about world affairs; he avidly read and followed the news, and he always espoused to his children and grandchildren that 'knowledge is power'. Additionally, and like clockwork, he was always sure to watch Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune each night. He also had quite the sweet tooth, loving all things chocolate, but also never turning away barbecue ribs. He appreciated music, especially from the 1950s, and took particular pride in his hometown connection to Dean Martin. While working as a teenager at a local pool hall, Walter met Martin once - who was already a local legend on the verge of nationwide fame. In a touching full-circle moment, the last song Walter would ever sing was "Memories Are Made of This," just a week prior to his passing. His life was shaped by a broad global perspective - from his Polish heritage, which he remained fiercely protective of until his final days, to his marriage to a British gal, and for the many years he lived overseas, experiences he truly cherished. Yet, through it all, Walter maintained a steadfast devotion to the United States and the fundamental ideals of freedom she represents. Having seen the true horrors of war firsthand, he still believed those freedoms were always worth defending - a conviction so profound that it inspired his youngest daughter to follow in his military footsteps. On a more personal level, Walter credited the Army with setting him on the right path and providing opportunities that otherwise might have been unavailable to him. For this, he remained deeply grateful for his time in service. The lessons he learned and the experiences he endured forged an unparalleled strength and resilience that remained with him for the nearly 55 years following his retirement. Perhaps his most awe-inspiring fortitude and resolve, however, emerged in his final five years. Facing total blindness from glaucoma and significant hearing loss, he remained remarkably positive and strong in the face of such debilitating circumstances. Drawing on the same discipline he developed as a soldier, he pulled himself up by his bootstraps and found new ways to navigate the loss of his senses - even in his 90s, showing that one is never too old to adapt and overcome. Walter was a man of many layers - cheeky, gentle, and unflappable, yet capable of swift and heroic action when it mattered most. He was a man of service who found salvation in his time in the Army and in his enduring love for Patricia. He loved his children and grandchildren with his whole heart, a devotion matched only by his rare, honest humility - a trait that truly defined his character. His service to his country and the world was extraordinary, but his capacity for love and the strength of his spirit are what will be remembered most. In addition to those previously mentioned, Walter was preceded in death by his dear siblings: Genevieve Bailey, Elizabeth Barker, Rose Colaiacovo, Theresa Canella, Frank Wisnieski, Alexander Stanley Wisnieski, and John "Vish" Wisnieski. He is further survived by his two great-grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. A funeral mass was held for Walter at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Woodbridge, Virginia, on October 29, 2025. The following day, he and Patricia were interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Most meaningfully, they were reunited with their firstborn, Sharon, who was laid to rest there during Walter’s years of active duty. They are also never far from their boys, Kevin and Anthony, who rest eternally just upriver at Great Falls National Park, where the earth connects them still.
