In Loving Memory of Ricardo H. Zavaleta 1937 – 2026 Born in December 17, 1937, Ricardo lived a life defined by service, generosity, and an unwavering love for his family. In 1971, he moved to the United States to begin a distinguished career with the Organization of American States (OAS). Through years of dedication and leadership, he rose to lead the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD), where he worked tirelessly with nations throughout the Americas to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse. His work left a lasting impact on countless communities and reflected his lifelong commitment to public service. While his professional accomplishments were remarkable, those who knew him best will remember him for the joy he found in everyday life. After retirement, he embraced every day with enthusiasm. He loved fishing, belonged to several wine clubs, and cherished lunches with his friends. His daily routine included delivering little treats to the people he had come to know and love. He had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel like family. Above all else, his greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband who adored his wife, Rhina. He was a loving father, a proud grandfather, and an adoring great-grandfather. He believed deeply in the value of education and encouraged his grandchildren to pursue knowledge, work hard, and never stop learning. He loved sharing his passion for fishing and always encouraged his kids/grandkids to learn and practice Spanish, preserving the language and culture that meant so much to him. Known affectionately by many as "Jefe," he earned the admiration and respect of colleagues, friends, and neighbors alike. Yet beyond the titles and accomplishments was a humble, caring man whose greatest legacy is the love he shared so freely. He leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his wisdom, his humor, his generosity, and the countless memories created around fishing trips, family gatherings, long conversations, and everyday moments that became extraordinary simply because he was there. His legacy of service, kindness, and love will continue through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those whose lives he touched.
