Jeanne Charlotte Hinz

In the early afternoon of August 5, 2022, Jeanne Charlotte Hinz of Triangle, VA died at the age of 98 surrounded by loved ones. Jeanne was born and raised in Madison, WI in 1924 to Oscar and Ruth Johnson; she was the oldest of five children. She left her studies at the University of Wisconsin to enlist in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) during WWII, and served as a cryptographer with the Signal Corps in the Pacific Theater. In 1946 she returned to Madison and civilian life. In 1948 she married Harry Hinz and they began their 66-year journey. As a military spouse, she raised her four children on-the-go at duty stations from Okinawa, Japan to Chateauroux, France. Eventually, the family settled in Virginia where she returned to the work force and enjoyed many years as the Registrar for the Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing. Her stint in the Army ignited a passion for travel and, over the years, she was able to see and experience a great deal of the world. After retiring in 1986, Jeanne was always ready for an adventure whether it was a Sunday afternoon drive or a trip to China. Jeanne also volunteered her secretarial skills at her beloved church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Her children will also attest to her skill as a cook and baker. She was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and always put her family first. Jeanne is preceded in death by her husband, Harry. She will always remain much loved by her surviving siblings: Karen (Barry) Fisher and Jim Johnson; her children: Steven (Linda) Hinz of Woodbridge, Jeffrey (Tamara) Hinz of Ono, CA, David (Alta) Hinz of Gaithersburg, MD, and Marilyn (Jeff) Wilson of Springfield; her grandchildren: Brian, Christopher (Karina), Michael, Matthew, Eric, Paul (Morgan), and Kelly (Rob); three great-granddaughters; and, nieces and nephews. Visitation for Jeanne will be on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at 12:15pm at Concordia Lutheran Church, 3637 Graham Park Road, Triangle, VA 22172 with a memorial service following at 1:00pm.
