Bettye Jo Johnson

Bettye Jo (Denmon) Johnson, 85, of Dale City, Virginia, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, at Sentara Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She was a devoted homemaker/domestic engineer and childcare nurturer for many children in her community. Bettye was a faithful member of the Jehovah’s Witness Church and cherished her spiritual community. She enjoyed being in nature, an accomplished master gardener, and an environmentalist who could transform anything into beauty with ease and care. Born on November 5, 1938, in Smithville, Texas, Bettye spent her formative years under the loving guidance of her grandparents, Joe “Papa Joe” Denmon and Minnie “Mama Pet” Denmon. She attended grade school in the Longview community and graduated from Mary A. Brown High School in Smithville. Bettye later pursued higher education at Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas. On June 3, 1963, Bettye married Bob Hulen Johnson in Temple, Texas. The couple spent a brief period living in Germany before settling in Northern Virginia in 1968, where they raised their family and made a lasting home. Bettye is preceded in death by her mother, Charlesy (Denmon) Hardeman; stepfather, Kara Hardeman; and brothers, Kara Charles Hardeman, and Thomas Hardeman. She leaves behind her loving husband of 61 years, Bob Hulen Johnson; and her children: Brian Hulen Johnson, Beryl Jeannine Johnson, Barbie Jill Johnson, Beverly Joyce Ouellette, and Brett Horan Johnson, along with her daughter-in-law, Lauren Johnson. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Tymothy Ouellette, Lyric Johnson, Ché Nadia Johnson, Foster Jobelle Johnson-Lewis, Del Johnson, André Forrester-Spears, and Tyler Lewis. Bettye is also survived by her beloved brothers, Author “Bo” Hardeman, Eugene Hardeman, and Cranston Hardeman, as well as numerous cousins and friends. Bettye Jo Johnson’s Homegoing Service will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024, at Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 3200 Golansky Blvd, Woodbridge, VA. Family and friends are invited to the Viewing Service from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by the Funeral Service at 12:00 PM. The burial will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico at 2:00 PM, with a procession to the cemetery. In honor of Bettye’s memory, flowers and cards may be sent to Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc.
