Obituary for Arthur G. Methvin
Arthur G. Methvin of Lake Ridge, VA, died on July 27, 2010 at the age of 79. He was born in Jefferson County, Florida on September 24,1930, and grew up primarily in Madison County, Florida near the Georgia state line. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1948. He enlisted in the US Air Force after graduation and served in Okinawa during the Korean War. While on Okinawa, he attended night school operated by the University of California earning 51 semester hours, enabling him to enter Florida State as a second semester sophomore after discharge. He received his BS (cum laude) in 1954 and continued at FSU to obtain an MBA in 1955.
He entered the property and liability insurance profession that year, and most of his career was with Aetna Casualty and Surety Company. His last position with Aetna prior to the sale of its C&S division to Travelers Insurance was Underwriting Manager for DC, Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland. After an early retirement from Aetna, he helped establish a risk management consulting company in Rockville, MD and was president of the Hudson Consulting Group. In 1991, he accepted an appointment as Chief Insurance Examiner at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where he set the requirements and monitored the insurance programs for public housing authorities throughout the nation. He also conducted insurance training for the PHA’s at regional HUD offices.
In addition to his university degrees, he earned many professional degrees: CPCU (Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter), ARM (Risk Management), APA (Premium Auditing), AIAD (Insurance Accounting), Arc (reinsurance). He has been honored by the American Institute for CPCU and the Insurance Institute of America for his continuing education. He has also served as an instructor of insurance in the evening divisions of the University of Arkansas and University of Virginia.
He is survived by Jane, his wife of 55 years, sons David and Brian, daughter Laura, daughter-in-laws Dr. Donna Snyder and Dr. Janet Methvin, sister-in-law Dr. Elizabeth Roseberry and four grandchildren, Jennifer, Gregory, Kevin and Hannah.
