Ernest F. Philipp, 79
Lieutenant Colonel Ernest F. Philipp (USAF), of River Ridge in Woodbridge Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on August 31, 2018.
Ernie was born on October 10, 1938, in Manhattan, New York. He was the son of Franz Leo Philipp and Marie Louise Quetel.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anita Philipp (Lisewski). He was the beloved father of Lisa Gibson (Charles Gibson) and their children, Lauren and Scott; Michelle Bower (Mark Bower) and their children, Caroline and Emily; and Corrinne Wilson (Bud Wilson) and son Jacob.
Ernie was raised in the Bronx and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School. He attended Manhattan College and worked as a commercial photographer before joining the Air Force. Ernie joined the Aviation Cadets and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1959. He amassed more than 3,000 flying hours in the B-52 Bomber during his military career. Ernie served in numerous key duty positions to include Electronic Warfare Officer, Senior Navigator, and Computer Operations Officer. He served in the Vietnam War, earning the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and a Meritorious Service Medal. In addition, Ernie earned his private pilot’s license and flew the family all over the United States whether they wanted to or not.
Upon his retirement, Ernie accepted a position with Northern Virginia Community College where he taught computer science for 22 years.
Ernie and his wife Anita shared many wonderful memories of places they lived and travelled. Their adventures took them all over the globe, where Ernie never met a “stranger” and enjoyed chatting with everyone he encountered. Together Ernie and Anita raised three daughters building a close knit and loving family. Ernie’s outgoing nature, strong-will and adventurous spirit will be greatly missed and remembered always.
